The Christmas decorations are up at the White House.  I love that the kitchen garden is part of the 300-pound gingerbread White House on display in the State Dining Room!  How cute is this?!…

The Obamas have embraced local healthy agriculture.  Michelle Obama planted the kitchen garden on the White House lawn, visited the nearby farmer’s market, and promotes gardening and healthy food education through her Let’s Move! campaign for healthier kids.  Her recent book, American Grown:  the Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America makes a great Christmas present for the DC locavores on your list.

And the President has brought beer brewing right into the White House for the first time ever, encouraging his culinary staff to brew up some homemade honey ale using honey from the kitchen garden.  It doesn’t get more local than that!  Here’s a video showing the process.

Finally, I’d like to make a gratuitous plug for my friend Lisa’s Pom Pom Bo, a prominent feature of the White House Christmas display that comes face to face with the real Bo in his video tour of the holiday decorations.  So cute!  Lisa, all that hot gluing paid off.
